Arrangements and organising activities related to funerals are usually left in charge of undertakers, who are also called funeral directors. To achieve success in this profession the undertaker carrying out these duties must possess certain essential and unique skills and qualities.
Since an undertaker’s services may be required at any time of day or night, the person venturing into this profession should be ready to be on call for 24 hours. He should be ready to spend most of his time outdoors because of the nature of the job.
The undertaker should be able to respect the feelings of clients, listen and understand their requirements and interact lucidly. He must be able to manage and interact with people of different age groups and people having various religious and cultural backgrounds. He must be compassionate and should understand others’ feelings. But he will need to provide support to the grieving family and must remain strong and mentally detached to be able to do so.
As an undertaker, a person should project a dignified and serene personality, while taking care that his behaviour doesn’t intensify the sorrow of the bereaved family members and relatives.
Knowledge of various religious customs, rituals and beliefs and profound respect for these greatly helps undertakers find success in their profession. As different people follow various funeral rites and methods, it is better to have knowledge of these.
A good undertaker will essentially possess good organizational skills and managerial abilities. Making preparations for critical services like flowers, hearse etc will entail coordination with many providers and will require leadership and management abilities.
An undertaker must be proficient in legal matters and should know the legal formalities to be followed, or the formal approvals required from the government authorities before conducting funeral ceremonies. The necessary rules and formalities to be followed to get a death certificate or to make valid insurance claims must also be known to him.
Lastly, an undertaker should ensure that his driver’s licence is regularly updated and that he can drive the hearse or funeral limousines during the service.
